Drummond Island

Drummond Island is a large island in Lake Huron off the eastern shore of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
The island has several snowmobile trails on the southeastern part of the island that are used for four wheeling in the summer months. The trails are used not only by Michigan clubs but also Jeep Jamboree, which holds a two-weekend event there every year in June.

There are two main trails.

The first trail begins from the back of the parking overflow parking lot across the street from the Woodmoor resort, which lies on the northwest side of the island. This trail snakes through the center of the island and intersects the main east west road on the island on the south eastern part of the island. The only major obstacles are a swampy section with water, mud and hidden logs and a clay pit area with deep ruts. Otherwise the trails are heavily wooded with several glens.

The second trail begins from the main east west road in the southeast part of the island and loops through the southeast part of the island to the beach area and returns to the main east west road. The trail skirts Lake Huron, and at one point the trail goes through a reed-filled lagoon. The main obstacles on the rest of the trail is lots of deep ruts filled with sloppy mud.

The trails are generally in heavily wooded areas and feature very little variation in elevation. The main obstacle is water and mud, and there is plenty of that! The only place there is a rock climb is at the entry to Marble Head on the southeast corner of thi sland where there is a mild shelf. The trail enters the shore on the south side of the island. After the shore section, the trail passes through more water and mud before intersecting the main road.

First Visit - July, 1998

Lee & Cec went to Drummond for a weekend but did not find the main trails. Here Lee attacks a "mean" mudhole with water as much as 4" deep.
Cec gamely accompanies Lee on his backwoods exploration. She tooks lots of nice flower photos that day.

Jeep Jamboree - June 2000

Drummond Island is accessed by a 15 minute ferry ride from Detour City Michigan.
The trails traverse flower-filled meadows.
Cec stands by a boggy trail.
A beautiful woodland trail.
Farmer Lee guards his muddy TJ at the marina.
Lee makes waves. Unfortunately the water got into the distributor briefly decommissioning the TJ. A can of Wire Dry provided by the trail leader fixed the problem.
Lee emerges from the water a bit splattered.
Lee descends steps to Marble Head, which is a rock shelf on the southeastern part of the island provigind a beautiful view of Lake Huron.
On the shores of beautiful Lake Huron...what it's all about.

Wolverine Run - June, 2001

The Wolverine gang poses at the scenic Marble Head on the southeast corner of the island. Lake Huron is in the background, and Canada is only a few miles away.
The Wolverines line up on Shale Beach on the southern shore of the island.
Lee poses in front of the ill-fated Grand Cherokee on Shale Beach while other Wolverines comb the beach.
Lee and Cec pose at Marble Head.
Rick climbs the Steps on the short road from Marble Head.
Kevin has a minor breakdown during a brief shower.
