Ourah Jeep Jamboree - Ouray, CO, September, 1998
Ouray was my first Jeep
Jamboree. I drove the 1500+ miles from the Detroit area, and Cec joined
me in Omaha. The scenery along the trails was fabulous--there is a reason
that Ouray is called the "Switzerland of America."
The first day we drove part of the Alpine Loop via the Engineer Pass Trail to the ghost mining town Animas Forks where we had lunch and lectures on geology, mining and Native American cultures. The return from Animas Forks was via the California and Corkscrew Gulch Trails through Californina Pass and Hurricane Pass.
The second day we drove to Telluride and took the Imogene Pass Trail back to Ouray. There were some frightening ledge roads on the way up, and at one point we passed another line of Jeeps headed in the opposite direction--my right tire was right on the edge! From Imogene Pass they say you can see Arizona at Four Corners over 200 miles away. What a view! The photo shows my TJ parked at the crest of Imogene pass with the Four Corners in the background.
