The Wilsons of Macon County, Alabama

In the 1850 census of Macon County shows Mary Wilson, 45, b. North Carolina with the following children:

Although he is listed out of order, it is likely that James is also a some of Mary Wilson.

Living next door is Joseph Wilson, 48, b. North Carolina and Nancy Wilson, 43, b. North Carolina. with the following children:

Living next door to Nancy is Theophilus. J. Josey, who married a Mary Wilson in and later lived in Walker County, Texas along with the Wilsons. Mary was born 24 Feb. 1826 in Lydia, Darlington County, SC and died 10 September 1906 at Alvin, TX. They were married about 1841 in Darlington District, South Carolina. .

The Walker County, Texas, Wilsons

Two of the Macon County Wilson brothers moved to Walker County, Texas in the 1850s.

A James E. Wilson, born in 1830, also lived in Walker County four doors from Pinckney. In 1859 he witnessed a deed for land in Walker and Polk County that Pinckney purchased from Theophilus Josey. Pinkney named his eldest son James E. James E. Wilson served in the 24th Texas Cavalry in the Civil War and died in a prison hospital in St. Louis. James E. Wilson married Eliza Smith in Alabama. Several Smiths in Montgomery and Macon Counties are said to have married Wilsons.

It is unlikely that James E. Wilson was a brother to Pinckney and Alexander. Although James Wilson appeared in the 1850 Macon Co., Alabama census at age 20 with Pinckney's family. However, he is listed at the bottom of the family out of age order. Alexander is also 20 in the same census, and there is a younger James in the family. This seems to indicate that James E. Wilson was not a twin to Alexander but was perhaps a cousin who came to live with Nancy's family, perhaps at the time of her husband's death.

It appears that Mary, the wife of Theophilus Josey, was a sister to Pinckney and Alexander. In 1850 the Joseys lived next door to Nancy Wilson and her children, including the above 3 boys, in Macon County, Alabama. The Joseys named one of their sons Robert Pinckney Josey.

Pinkney served in the Civil War in the 5th Texas Infantry, Hood's Brigade of the Confederate Army.

Pinkney and Louisa Wilson lived in Walker County until after 1870 when they either moved to San Jacinto County or were taken into San Jacinto County when the county was formed. In 1880 they lived next door to David Murrah, whose son Samuel their daughter Henrietta married.

It appears that Pinkney began to follow the sawmills in the 1880's, and he died in 1894 reportedly at Old Honea in Montgomery Co., TX. He is apparently buried at Cartwright-Rabon Cemetery west of Conroe, but there is no grave marker.

Pinkney and Louisa had the following children:

  1. James E., born ca .1862.
  2. Sarah A., born ca. 1866
  3. Henrietta E., born December 17, 1867, who married Samuel Becton Murrah.
  4. Charles P., born ca. 1870
  5. Ella, born ca. 1872
  6. Althea, born ca. 1874
  7. Addie, born ca. 1876
  8. Henry, born 1880 and died in 1903.

Louisa eventually moved to Trevat, Trinity Co, TX; Pollok, Angelina Co., TX; and Keltys, Angelina Co., TX. Louisa died in 1921 and is buried at the Keltys Cemetery at Keltys on the northwest edge of Lufkin. The cemetery is in the midst of the property of the former Owens-Illinois plant.

One of James' sons, Joe, lived in Angelina County and was a good fiddler according to his cousin and the author's father, Elroy Murrah. Elroy always claimed that Joe owned a Stradivarius violin that his cousin Clarence obtained in France during World War I. Elroy said it was buried with him. It probably wasn't a Strad, but it is possible.
