The Walters of Jones County, Mississippi
There were quite a few Walters in Jones County,
but I have never been able to connect any of them to my ancestress Margarette
Walters, who married Daniel Pitts, Sr. in Perry County in the early 1820s.
There were three other Walters in the area: Willoughby Walters, Asa Walters,
and Herring Walters. These are thought to have been brothers, and Margarette
may have been their sister. We know that Herrin Walters came from South
Carolina.
An interesting sidelight to the Walters history in Jones County is that
several Walters received Union (yes, Union!) Civil War pensions in Jones
County. Jones County was known as a hotbed of anti-Confederate sentiment
during the Civil War. For example, the brother (Henry Landrum) of Margarette's
son-in-law, Linson Landrum, named a son Ulysses Grant Landrum during the
War.
