Perkins of South Carolina
The earlies know Perkins in the line lived in
the Pee Dee region of South Carolina. The Perkins were of a mixed people
known as Redbones, which are closely related
to the Melungeons of Virginia and Tennessee and the Lumbee Indians of
Robeson Co., North Carolina.
Joshua Perkins, believed to be the son of Jacob
"Old Jock" Perkins and Mary "Polly" Black, served
in the American Revolution. He is accepted by the DAR, and descendants
are eligible for membership. He moved with his wife Mary Mixon and family
to Southwest Louisiana in the early 1800's along with other Redbones families,
including Ashworth and Dial.
Since the Perkins had very dark skin, they were constantly dogged with
rumors that they were part African. There was even a slander trial
in Tennessee based on that issue.
