My fourth great grandparents are believed to be John Henry Johnson and Dorcas Tabitha Carter. They had the following children:
The Johnsons lived in Alabama in 1835, the year of Allen Johnson's birth.
My third great grand-grandfather was Allen Collins Johnson, who was born in Alabama about 1836 [1860 Wilcox Co., AL Census]. He married Emily Watson in 1852. [Jack Wainwright ]. Their children were as follows:
According to family stories Allen died in the Civil War. [Arzy Squyres, his grandaughter]. Information from other researchers indicates that Allen Johnson served in the 42nd Alabama Infantry. [Jack Wainwright ]. He enlisted on 26 April 1862 and was listed on the company rolls in August and October 1862. The 42nd Alabama served as part of the Vicksburg garrison during the seige of Vicksburg. Allen wrote several touching letters to Emily while in the army expressing his tenderness for her and instructing her on various farm management matters. These letters were submitted to the State of Florida as part of her application for a Confederate widow's pension. Collateral descendants of Allen's wife Emily Watson indicate that Allen died in a Union hospital in Vicksburg, Mississippi from wounds received in battle. [Fran Ferguson]. The exact date of Allen's death and burial location are unknown.
In 1867 Emily and her children moved north of Munson, Santa Rosa Co., FL. [Reba Snider]
Researchers origninally thought that Allan's middle name was Columbus. However, recently discovered Civil War records clearly show that his middle name was Collins {Reba Snider - Civil War Records].
