Johnson Lines
I have three Johnson lines:
- Benjamin F. Johnson of Simpson Co., Mississippi
- John Henry Johnson of Wilcox Co., Alabama
- Partick Johnson of Trinity County, Texas
This page is intended for information common to them all.
The Johnson Name
At least some of the Johnsons were probably Scottish and likely of the Scots-Irish
who first emigrated to Ulster (Northern Ireland) before coming to American
in the 1700s. Johnson, which simply means "John' settlement", was
originally an Anglo-Saxon name that was applied to a Scots Lowland family.
It was originally spelled Johnston or Johnstone. Border Scots often pronounced
it "Jawnson", which is likel a clue to the origins of these Johnson
families.
There are three major branches of the Johnstone clan:
- Annandale in Dumfries and Galloway
- Caskieben in Aberdeenshire
- A miscellaneous group that took their name from places named Johnstone.
A history of these groups is shown on the Clan
Johnstone site.
