The Johnson Name

At least some of the Johnsons were probably Scottish and likely of the Scots-Irish who first emigrated to Ulster (Northern Ireland) before coming to American in the 1700s. Johnson, which simply means "John' settlement", was originally an Anglo-Saxon name that was applied to a Scots Lowland family. It was originally spelled Johnston or Johnstone. Border Scots often pronounced it "Jawnson", which is likel a clue to the origins of these Johnson families.
