Stephen Hopkins

Stephen Hoplins was born ca 1580 in England and died between 6 Jun and 17 Jul 1644 in Plymouth, MA. He was a tanner and merchant. Some say he ran a tavern.

It has been reported widely that Stephen's first wife was Constance Dudley, that has been disproven. The name of his first wife was Mary, and they were married before 1604, probably in Hampshire, England.

Stephen was unique among the Mayflower passengers in that he had already been to the New World. He was minister's clerk on the Sea Venture which left London 2 Jun 1609 for Virginia. It was damaged in a hurricane and marooned at Bermuda. The survivors built two ships, the Patience and the Deliverance, and sailed to Virginia, where they arrived 24 May 1610. Stephen encouraged an uprising, and later was sentenced to death by court martial. However, he was pardoned and returned to England. Stephen also took part in building a fort at Virginia Beach.

Stephen came to New England on the Mayflower along with his second wife Elizabeth, and his children Giles, Constance, and Damaris, along with two servants, Edward Doty and Edward Lister. His son Oceanus was born on ship. He resided in Plymouth.
