Dollarhide comes form Delahyde or De la Hyde, meaning "of the land" and likely came to the British Isles from Normandy with William the Conqueror.
Francis, Sr. was High Sheriff of Baltimore County and served three terms in the Maryland legislature. He owned a 1000 acre tobacco plantation.
John Dollarhide, a descendant of Francis Dollarhide, Sr., was born in 1751 in Caswell County, North Carolina. He married Nancy Chittington in 1784 in Caswell County. John died in Angelina Co., Texas in 1853 at age 102.
John Dollarhide served in the Revolutionary War at the Battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens in South Carolina. There is no written record of his service, and he was never able to obtain a pension based on his service. However, his description in his pension applications are so vivid that the DAR has accepted his service.
After North Carolina, the Dollarhides lived successively in Kentucky; Tennessee; Sevier Co., Arkansas (1810); Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana (bef. 1846); and finally Angelina Co., Texas (1846).
John and Nancy Dollarhide are buried at Dollarhide Cemetery near Diboll in Angelina Co., Texas. He is the only Revolutionary War veteral buried in Angelina County, and his grave is marked by a stone set by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
John Dollarhide's granddaughter, Sarah, married Martin D. White in Angelina or Trinity County, Texas. Sarah is thought to be the daughter or Asahel Dollarhide, but that tis not certain.
