Early Bangs

While some say that the Bangs name originated in Yorkshire, other researchers say that the earliest incidences were Norfolk in the 1500's and Essex in the late 1500's.

Plymouth Plantation

Edward Bangs arrived at Plymouth aboard the Anne in 1623. According to parish registers he was born at Panfield, Essex (reports that he was born at Chichester, County Sussex are thought to be incorrect), England about 1591, the son of John Bangs and Jane Chavis Bangs, grandson of Richard and Margaret Bangs, and great-grandson of Thomas or William Bangs. His wife is believed to have been Rebecca Hobart, though that has not been proven conclusively. He was a shipwright, and he died at Eastham, Barnstable County in 1678.

Edward and Rebecca Bangs children included:

  1. Rebecca, born about 1637, married Capt. Jonathan Sparrow, and died 1667.
  2. Hannah, born about 1644 in Plymouth, married John Doan, and died after 1667.
  3. Capt. Jonathan Bangs, born 1650 and died 1710/11.
